MKD Promotes Skilled Trades at Career Fairs

MKD Electric is keenly aware of the widening gap between the supply and demand of skilled tradespeople. A survey by RIDGID tools reveals that only 6 percent of high school students plan to pursue a career in the skilled trades (defined as plumbers, carpenters, electricians, heating, ventilation or air conditioning installers, or repair people). Also revealed in the survey were reasons why students didn’t consider the trades a viable career option, including:

• they don’t know enough about it.
• they don’t believe there is a lot of opportunity in the skilled trades.
• they don’t think the trades are cool.
• skilled trades were not high tech enough.

As part of our on-going efforts towards recruiting talented individuals for our in-house apprenticeship program, we participated in several career fairs in the area, including one held at the Museum of Science and Industry geared towards introducing middle and high school students to careers in the chemical field. Several MKD representatives were on hand to talk to students about rewarding and exciting careers as industrial electricians. A variety of PPE were on display for the students to try on, and they were encouraged to test out their electrical skills by completing circuits on a panel.
